Jane Springfield is a native of Atlanta residing in Marietta,
Georgia. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Georgia,
she has been an artist all her life and turned to full-time painting four
years ago. She has taken classes and workshops in watercolor and oils from
accomplished artists. In previous careers she was an agency art director,
catalog producer and high technology marketing director. Jane is a signature
and board member of Georgia Watercolor Society and an advanced merit member
of Atlanta Artist Center; she belongs to several other art organizations.
Jane exhibits locally and nationally and has had several one-woman shows of
her work. Jane was selected as the Artist in Residence for Sapelo Island in
Jane’s landscapes and still-life paintings capture the essence of special
places. She is drawn to the spontaneous nature of watercolor that allows quick
interpretation and unexpected results in her work. She also works in oils,
primarily in plein aire. On location or in her studio, she creates paintings
inspired by what she sees on travels and in local scenes. Her paintings, based
on hiking and backpacking trips all over the world, have been accepted in
many prestigious exhibitions and have won numerous awards.
My favorite studio is the great outdoors. I love to hike wilderness trails
and explore scenic places where I see grand vistas or intimate compositions
in nature. As a hiker and an artist, I am compelled to paint scenes of places
that touch me. While I love to travel the world, I always find inspiration
in my native Georgia.
Much of my work focuses on the elements of nature: rocks and water, mountains
and trees, and the patterns of light and shadow that define them. Painting
on location or in my studio, I work with watercolors, oils or pencils. Each
of my paintings elicits a memory of being in a special place at a particular
moment. I hope to share this experience with those who view my paintings.
As a newcomer to the Ossabaw Island Collective, I hope to provide a fresh
viewpoint through my paintings. I plan to paint on location and also from
photographs I take during my visit to the island. I am very excited about
discovering a new place and am thrilled to be included in this special group.
