The Ossabaw
Artists Collective
Ossabaw Island is one of the barrier islands off the coast of Georgia,
approximately twenty miles southeast of Savannah. Comprising some 26,000
acres of wooded uplands, freshwater ponds, beaches, salt marshes and tidal
creeks, Ossabaw is one of the largest of Georgia’s barrier islands, and
is a world apart, remaining unconnected to the mainland by any bridge, causeway
or scheduled ferry service.
The Ossabaw Artists Collective is an informal
group of artists and photographers who visit Ossabaw Island regularly in
order to make visual art (paintings and photographs). From the outset we
have encouraged varied styles and media. For example, in addition to oil
and watercolor painters, we count among our participants a pinhole photographer,
a world expert on carbon printing, large format photographers, digitally
oriented artists, a professional printer, and university level art educators.
We have intentionally limited our group size
to no more than twelve people so we can all gather together around the dining
table for conversation and the evening meals, which we prepare for ourselves.
The artistic and creative interaction among us has been personally meaningful
and exciting to each of us. With each succeeding trip to Ossabaw, we add
to a growing body of work about which we feel reasonably proud.
We have reached a point where we feel that
the natural thing to do is to share this work with others and to share our
enthusiasm and support for the island and Eleanor Torrey West's concept of
a unique heritage preserve. Above all, by sharing our creative work, we express
our appreciation for the solitude, natural beauty, and wonder of Ossabaw
Island.
